Contrast

Contrast for a cold plunge at home

Contrast works with any cold plunge tub, ice barrel or bath, because it reads the water through your Apple Watch rather than connecting to the tub. On an Apple Watch Ultra or Series 10 and later, getting in starts the round and records the temperature you were actually sitting in, round by round, alongside your heart rate. Every session goes to Apple Health, and there is no account to sign into before a plunge.

Your tub's display and your wrist disagree

A tub's thermostat reads the water where its probe sits, often near the chiller return. Your wrist reads the water around your arm. Cold water stratifies, and a body warms the layer around it, so the two numbers can disagree during a plunge.

Contrast records the reading at your wrist for the length of the round. Neither number is wrong. The wrist reading is the one describing what you were in.

Tracking the same tub over months

Most home plunges sit at one setting for weeks, which suits the adaptation measures. Cold shock, the jump in heart rate when you get in from rest, is only ever compared between plunges in the same water band, because colder water makes the response bigger and longer. A steady tub gives that comparison something to work with.

An outdoor barrel is harder. It drifts from near freezing in winter to the high teens in summer and crosses bands as it goes, and each crossing starts a new comparison. The record is still right; the trend just takes longer to fill in.

Nothing between you and the plunge

There is no account, no pairing and no connection to the tub. Nothing needs signing into before you get in, and nothing breaks when the tub's firmware updates or its Wi-Fi drops. If your tub has its own app for setting the temperature, keep using it for that; Contrast only keeps the record.

Each person in a house uses their own phone and watch, so two people sharing one tub each keep their own history.

What a cold plunge does not need

Cold water is most dangerous in the first minute, when the gasp reflex peaks, and very cold water can make it hard to move within about ten minutes. Contrast has no streaks, no countdown and no target to beat. It records what you did and leaves the decision about how long to stay in with you.

Common questions

Does Contrast connect to my cold plunge tub?

No. It reads the water through an Apple Watch Ultra or Series 10 and later, so it works with any tub, barrel or bath without pairing. Keep your tub's own app for controlling it.

Why does Contrast show a different temperature from my tub?

The tub reads the water at its probe; your watch reads the water around your wrist. Cold water stratifies and your body warms the layer next to it, so the two often disagree.
